Reading and Spelling - Getting it Right

'By the end of 4th grade, children having difficulties in learning to read begin to feel less positive about their abilities than when they started school. As we follow children through elementary school and middle school, self esteem and the motivation to learn to read decline even further.' (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development 2005)

Children who cannot read on grade level by the end of grade 1 rarely catch up without remedial help. Usually the gap widens as time progresses. (Link between Student's Reading Ability and Behaviour Problems - TeachsafeSchools.org)

Let's get it right.

The course focus:

  • A look at the different reading approaches in our education system

         - whole language and synthetic phonics;

  • Learn how to assist students with reading difficulties by becoming familiar with the alphabetic code of 42 sounds;
  • Become familiar with our spelling patterns and generalisations to help children with spelling;
  • Teaching children how to spell as life long spellers and not week by week spellers;

 The course is designed for all teachers who want to make a change in the reading and writing levels of the children they teach. Teachers will walk away with hands-on activities to implement into their classroom.

Discovery is the key to keeping what has just been learned.

If we are given the opportunity to discover how a concept works rather than simply being told it is so, we feel it is a lesson learned for life…
